Gatefee Change Memo

The Lac La Ronge Regional Waste Management Corporation would like to thank the residence of the tri-community and the other regional members of the corporation for their patience and support as the LLRRWMC staff have adjusted to new permit and design requirements after the official opening of the new landfill. It has taken commitment and patience from every member of this regional landfill as we learn and adjust to the changes. So, thank you!

Background

LLRRWMC was formed in 2004 as a partnership between the Town of La Ronge, the Northern Village of Air Ronge, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band, as well as the Ministry of Government Relations on behalf of the Northern Saskatchewan Administration District. The Ministry of Parks, Culture and Recreation is granted associate member status through an annual contractual obligation. In 2004 the LLRRWMC also assumed responsibility for the operation and permitting of the La Ronge Recycling Depot. Currently the LLRRWMC Board of Directors is represented by members of each municipality based on population percentage.

Town of La Ronge – Joe Hordyski & Abby Besharah
Northern Village of Air Ronge – Corey Hardcastle
Lac La Ronge Indian Band – Tayven Roberts & Ty Roberts
Ministry of Government Relations – Brad Henry

The new engineered landfill cell and related infrastructure began in 2018, which in turn, expanded the memberships of the corporation outside of the tri-community. LLRRWMC now supports communities from Timber Bay, all the way to Southend.

The landfill was designed in 3 phases for a total lifespan of 25 years. The 2018 construction was known as Phase 1. The newly engineered landfill cell was constructed with enough room to hold waste for 10 years. After max capacity is reached, LLRRWMC would move into Phase 2, with a newly engineered cell designed with another 10-year life span. Phase 3 includes joining the two cells together and creating one large mound for the remaining 5 years.

As of 2023 we are predicting to begin Phase 2 construction in 2040. The capital cost estimate for Phase 2 is $9,320,000.

Looking Ahead

As we start into our 4th year of operating and maintaining the new landfill, we have adjusted our budget goals to meet the needs of our permit requirements set forth by the Ministry of Environment. The O&M and capital investment have been estimated for the 2025 budget and it is apparent that we will need commitment, not only from our regional members, but from contractors and public using our landfill.

To make up some of these costs, the landfill will be altering the gate fees for all landfill usage starting January 1st, 2025. There will be a $10 minimum entrance fee for crossing the scale, and anything that contributes to our landfill cell capacity will be charged at $0.10/kg.

A FREE section of the landfill will be available to the right of the entrance past the gate where regional members can drop off salvageable and recyclable items. This area will be monitored. We would also like to take this time to remind members that recycling costs in Northern Saskatchewan are not cheap, and we are doing our best to find other alternatives and methods to reduce our footprint. Salvageable items are available at the landfill during operational hours only. Please be mindful and considerate when utilizing this area.

As we continue to grow, the FREE area will be expanded and include as many items and areas as possible so we can limit the amount of waste entering our landfill.

It is our hope that we can work with each other, share ideas and knowledge, and continue to build towards a more sustainable future.

Thank you again for your continued support.
